Getting Back, Computers, Japan
Hi to however might read this! I’ve been meaning to get back to this website and to start blogging properly after a dynamic year.
However, before I focus on more specific blog posts, I have to write about two things - Japan and computers. Not because of an interest in cyberpunk manga or Japanese technology, but because, separately, these two topics are what I want to focus the most on in the future, and what I’ve been focusing on for some time now anyway in my life.
A few brief notes about my life. I studied Japanese in university, I was really into literature (I still am!), and I also studied Translation and Editing. Eventually, I switched to software development. First full stack will Ruby on Rails, later on mostly backend with Elixir. It’s now been more than 8 years since I started working as a software developer professionally.
I love software development and in the last few years I’ve been getting more and more curious to learn more about new languages and technologies, to know new libraries in depth, to try out programming at a lower level, and of course I’ve been aiming to get better at Elixir, system design and architecture, and everything I’ve already poured significant efforts into.
I also love Japan and Japanese culture and outside of my work I want to spend some time keeping myself in good shape when it comes to reading and listening Japanese, and, if the opportunity arises, I would love to translate Japanese literature. To be transparent, I already have one published and one not yet published translation from the times before I got into software.
It is important to note that I cannot and don’t want to sacrifice my current profession, I do it with a lot of desire and curiosity and I want to stick to it, even in these uncertain times. Additionally, translating a book is a slow process and it can also be quite solitary. But I just love both working with software and with Japanese and I’ll do my best to follow the latter when I have time for it. This is why I want this blog to be about both. It would still probably be predominantly about my journey in software development, though.
Who knows, maybe sometimes it will be about both at the same time.
